About Hedy
I am a Laguna Beach baby, an original “Canyon Rat.” I grew up in the hills and on the beaches of Laguna. I am a lucky girl. My father was an artist who exhibited in the Festival of Arts, and I had an uncle who was a very serious painter, so I grew up thinking being an artist was a normal thing to do. Coming from an artist’s family, there were always art materials at my disposal: clay, paints, paper – I could play with all of them.
I lived in Laguna Beach until I was 18, then spent 10 years in Santa Cruz and four years in Jamaica – first with the Peace Corps, then teaching at an art school in Kingston. When I came back to the States, I decided there is no place like home. I’ve been back in Laguna ever since, except for three years when I got my MFA in design at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
I paint and I make hand-pulled prints and monotypes. My imagery runs a gamut from playful images to landscapes and symbolic abstraction. A friend and mentor once said that my work is personal and expressive and that there is always the touch of the poet in it. That pretty much sums it up.
